Basil Lane House
Bel-Air, CA

This remodel project involved a study of nonstructural elements that promote a spacious feeling: light, views, and connection to the outdoors.   The existing house was enhanced by the addition of a contemporary front and back yard.   Poured concrete steps that lead to a covered front porch, an oversized planter, and a long narrow infinity pool define the threshold from the street to the interior.   A smooth exterior plaster wall penetrates the house through a sheet of clear glass, while supporting an interior floating open staircase.   The ground floor walls were maintained for structural support.   Skylights open the roof to bring natural light into the dramatic double height space in the living room, creating a loft-like feel, and highlighting the sense of open space.
